Josh Kelly Trio
Saxophonist Josh Kelly (alto & soprano sax), an emerging young talent, who is the recipient of the 2019 PBS Young Elder of Jazz Award (a commission for a work to be performed as part of the 2019 MIJF). He presents the newest iteration of his trio, featuring Tamara Murphy (bass) and James Mclean (drums).
The Josh Kelly Trio has one foot firmly planted in history, and one foot slipping forward towards the unknown. With nods to the 60’s modal and spiritual jazz saxophone tradition, the listener can expect to hear flourishes of Coltrane, Joe Henderson and Pharaoh Sanders, but with a focus on innovation, rather than imitation.
Kelly has incorporated some unique influences (such as the rhythmic interplay of modern Australian jazz) and has used these concepts to compose music specifically for this trio, balancing sections of free improvisation with strong improvisational structures based on modal and rhythmic concepts
